The lancashire

Memphis, Tennessee

What started as a disaster became an opportunity for this historic bungalow, located in midtown Memphis, Tennessee.

During a summer storm, a massive oak tree limb crashed through the home, resulting in major structural damage. The owners embraced the situation and opted to update their beloved house (nicknamed the Lancashire) and renovate it to meet the needs of their growing family.

The scope of the project consisted of renovations to almost the entirety of the house and a new addition to accommodate more common living space, both indoor and out. The existing kitchen footprint was expanded to open up to a new family room and large screened in porch, offering a generous new gathering space for the family of six. A first floor primary suite (a rare amenity in historic homes) was created by adding a new bathroom on to an existing bedroom. A new mudroom and a powder room were also part of the expansion of the home.

The second floor, originally consisting of a small bedroom and bathroom, was expanded to add two additional bedrooms. The existing bedroom was converted to a cozy den, giving the family more options for flexible gathering space.
